]]>The post How often should you upgrade to a new phone?! appeared first on So Called Happenings.
]]>This week Apple announced their iPhone 13 series and Google is yet to announce their new Pixel 6. Oneplus 9RT is right around the corner and many more. Tech reviewers consider this month as Techtember considering the phone launches. with every launch, the one question that revolves in our head when a new phone launches. Should we upgrade? Or How often am I supposed to buy a new phone? When is the right time to buy? To answer those and give you a bit clarity is what I aim with this article. Considering your current phone is in good condition. I mean physically and in terms of software and usability too.
If you bought it the last year, then the answer is simple. NO, you are better off with your existing phone. The drive/ urge to buy the latest and greatest products is often termed as FOMO. Fear of missing out. Experienced when a device is launched or a new version comes out. We usually think that it has better features and devalue our existing phone and think of buying a new phone.
If you own a flagship device, that is a top tier mobile offering from a company, then it can easily run at least 2-3 years without a problem. Most of the Android companies offer two major android upgrades and 3 years of security updates. In the case of iPhones, they age pretty well. iPhones usually lasts 3-4 years without any problem. Apple sends updates for at least 5 years. To give you an idea, the iPhone 6s, launched in 2015, is receiving iOS 15 update. That doesn’t mean you should buy 6s now. But iPhones last longer. That’s why even old iPhones sell like hot cakes during the festive season where there will be many offers.
Also, many of the features that companies talk about during a new phone launch event, are just software features that often come to previous generations via OTA update.
Even if you own a mid-range phone, you don’t have to. These days mid-range phones are coming with fairly powerful processors, that can keep the device running for a bit long. Companies too are providing updates to their keep their phones running long.
Bottom line is, modern phones are powerful. If one uses it with minimal care, the phone can easily last at least 3 years without any problem. That said, we should also be careful before buying. These days mobile companies are launching too many products to keep up with and all are not good. So if you buy the wrong mobile for your needs, you might have to face some trouble to use or might have to adjust. For a full mobile buying guide click here.
These days mobiles are so different yet so similar in many ways. So mobile companies are trying soo hard to make people buy their phones. They use attractive ad campaigns and early-bird promotional offers. Companies are even offering upgrade plans, where one can upgrade to a new device by trading in their old one. But be careful there are a lot of terms and conditions and once you sign up for that program there are high chances you get less value for your device.
Don’t get into all that and upgrade your device to the latest one, unless it’s necessary. If you think your phone is lagging there are some tricks to make it a bit snappier, more about that in the upcoming article. So stay tuned. Reduce carbon footprint, e-waste and save some money.

]]>The Indian smartphone market has never been busy in recent times in this segment that is considered premium mid-range. There are mobiles from OnePlus, Xiaomi, Samsung, Poco, IQOO to my surprise Motorola as well.
The key feature in this segment is either it has good build quality or premium experience and of course they are powerful, in some cases, all.
Below is the list of best mobiles that are interesting for me and I think you need to look at them in no particular order also most of them are 5G mobiles unless mentioned so.
Yeah OP Nord 2 is the choice for the series and I can confidently say that it’s the best mobile that OnePlus has launched so far in 2021. It got all the good things to look for in a smartphone.
Good display and powerful processor and decent battery with super-fast charging solution to top it up and decent look nothing crazy.
More than anything the brand value of OnePlus has increased so much here in India and people are noticing their mobiles which allowed them to get into the mainstream profit-making devices from the enthusiastic brand that we used to know earlier in the day.
Nonetheless unlike 9series phones and CE that launched before Nord 2 is certainly value for money and a good offering from OnePlus.
We can see the Oppo-fication of the OnePlus devices in certain areas but the good thing is it got no ads as of now at least and a general user won’t notice much and certainly a good device to choose if you want a good all-round device.
Finally, after years of sub-par devices, Motorola has come up with challenging and more interesting mobiles. Both Moto Edge 20 and Edge 20 fusion are good devices for their prices. But the Edge 20 takes the crown.
From a practical trio of cameras in the back to a beautiful 10Bit Amoled with a 144hz refresh rate on the front Motorola nailed this time.
Edge 20 is more of a serve-all-needs phone with stock Moto UI without bs load of preinstalled apps and ads that some other OEMs bake into their devices and it also is one of the large mobiles you can buy in this segment for all your binge-watching sessions.
It’s equipped with the latest mid-range processor from Qualcomm i.e. 778G SoC and fairly fast 30w charging. It even has Wi-Fi 6e which is relatively new in the segment for better Wi-Fi reception. Coming to cons, be lack of stereo speakers and compact 4000mah battery and a plastic frame ( thanks to which it weighs less at just 163gms).
Keeping things aside Edge 20 is one of the best mobiles that one can choose in this segment and cannot go wrong.
The third one in the list is from iqoo, not so sub-brand of Vivo. A well-put-together mobile by iqoo except for the fun touch OS. Let’s talk about it. Though iqoo is a separate brand with no ties to Vivo, it still uses its service centres and that’s great considering the offline spreading of Vivo is quite high in India.
But what’s not great is using the same Funtouch OS in an enthusiastic package because the people that buy iqoo for its price to specs ratio are mostly tech enthusiasts and they care about user experience and are not okay with taking unnecessary permissions.
Keeping this one little compromise aside iqoo 7 is a well-built device and don’t disappoint you in any way, good performance comes with Snapdragon 870, good AMOLED display with a 120hz refresh rate and MEMC support, and another area where iqoo shines is in camera performance with triple cameras (technically two main sensors and a useless 2MP monochrome lens) on its back camera and a decent 16MP selfie shooter. Overall from all the Vivo mobiles out there, the iqoo 7 is a vivo-ish but reliable smartphone to consider under 30k.
Coming in at 4th is the newly launched Realme GT master edition, the suitcase lookalike designed by Naoto Fukasawa, a Japanese industrial designer who worked with Realme in the past with their X series devices defined this latest midrange offering by Realme. Looks is the one department this phone stands out from its competition. Simple yet industrial and functional too.
Equipped with SD 778 the same one found in Moto Edge 20 at a slightly lower price at 28,000 covers all the things that this segment has to offer. But the aspiration of Realme to compete with Redmi made the brand relentless with launching mobiles back to back, like take the example of the X7 series, initially Realme launched X7 and X7 Pro then again in no time launched X7 Max, and launching these many devices make it difficult to provide timely updates and optimization devices need for better functioning.
Keeping all this aside GT Master Edition is a good device and If you want something not ordinary also not too much attention lookout for this device. Also if you are planning to but get the voyager edition that comes with the designer’s signature on the back and kinda looks cool.
After a massive hit with its first device Poco F1 in Aug 2018, Poco has launched another device in the F lineup after 3 years of waiting. As much as these sub-brand companies say that they are separate from parent companies they can’t hide the facts, like the F3 GT, which is a rebranded Redmi K40 Gaming Edition that launched earlier this year. At least it’s not disappointing, to say the least.
Coming at 27,000 F3 GT comes with MediaTek Dimensity 1200 the same chip that can be found in many devices these days including Nord 2 and Realme X7 Max. It’s the latest and greatest offering from MediaTek and a capable one, performs well, and can do any task you throw at it, along with the inbuilt gaming triggers makes a perfect combo for gamers.
Cameras that can shoot well in good lighting conditions and sturdy build quality using metal and glass combo which is becoming less these days as many companies are opting for polycarbonate(fancy way of saying plastic) backs to cut some corners, which is not necessarily a bad thing as glass is glass and glass breaks. Overall if you are serious about gaming then you can check this one out else look for others.
Another good device that Realme launched this year is X7 Max. It’s like the affordable basic package that one can buy. It can deliver flagship-level performance all while keeping it low on the pocket. Coming with powerful MediaTek Dimensity 1200, a flagship chip SoC that can chew everything you can throw at it.
A not too crazy simple design, Decent cameras and display, and that super-fast charging for quick top-ups. Nothing special and nothing dull, an entry-level powerhouse that doesn’t disappoint you.
If you say Samsung to launch a midrange phone with their flagship SOC i.e. from Exynos 9 series chipsets a few years back I’d have laughed but the game has changed the competition from Chinese vendors pushed Samsung to make the unthinkable and that is focusing on the spec sheet instead of relying on brand value. F62 is the best mobile that Samsung has to offer in this segment.
The product of this is the Samsung F62 that launched earlier this year. It comes with Exynos 9285 the same one Samsung used in Note 10. Yes. It’s old but it is a flagship processor and it packs the same power. It flies through the normal day-to-day tasks and can handle most of the games with ease, there might be a chance of heating over prolonged sessions of gaming or camera use but that’s expected in any powerful chipset. Decent camera setup and a beautiful AMOLED display upfront through a normal 60Hz one. Packs a 7000mah battery that runs throughout the day no matter what you do, make the device a tad thick and heavy.
Samsung even provides a 25W adapter in the box. It also lacks 5G which might not be an issue as of now but have to mention as some of the users might use their devices for few years and might want 5G in their device. Overall a capable mobile from Samsung.
The entry-level OnePlus Nord CE that launched this year is more of a *compromise edition* rather than a core edition. The rebranded Oppo device now lacks many things that define one plus, like the alert slider which OnePlus fans love and one that I think every manufacturer has to include, is not present here. Of course, because this is the same Oppo Reno 4 5G that launched globally with Oxygen OS skin on top of Oppo’s Color OS on top of Android.
Since the merge with Oppo, there have been many small changes in the UI, for good and for bad, I think there is yet to see how this age. But reviewers are happy to report that there is no inclusion of ads here. That’s one less thing to worry about.
Coming to specifications of the device, it comes equipped with SD 750G 5G processor, though It technically supports 1 5G band here in India while the international variant supports dozen not a deal-breaker since 5G in India is a long way to be implemented. 90Hz AMOLED screen and decent battery and covers all the basics and is well suitable for normal day-to-day use.
If you are on the other side of the spectrum and want a pocket-friendly premium device then you will not go wrong with Mi 11 Lite. The polished version of the Redmi Note 10Pro has everything one needs for minimal tasks. From premium design to slim and light footprint 11 Lite is all for the looks and feel of the device. Weighing at just 157gm this is one of the light devices one can find in the market.
It even comes with an IP53- dust and splash resistant rating that many devices miss out on and gives peace of mind when met with splashes of water. Comes with a 90Hz 10Bit AMOLED display and power by relatively old SD 732G, a very able performer, might not do competitive gaming but can run smoothly for daily tasks.
Overall if you are looking for a slim, lightweight device for your hand as well as pocket, you won’t go wrong with this one, and do mind that this lacks 5G as well.
If not a recent device with less coverage, I’m sure Moto Edge 20 fusion would have made it to the list, but I’ll check that device for sure and update the same.
No device is perfect and no device is wrongly built (well except a few, let’s don’t talk about those now). As this is a blog, I can’t write about every device that launches, so above are the best phones under 30k that I think is interesting and you should take a look and compare mobiles. If you think I forgot to mention any device do let me know in the comments down below.
Note: Everyone has their tastes and preference, so before buying weigh out all options and pick the one that you think is the best for your needs. Also, do your research then buy and make most of your hard-earned money. Also, remember that there is no best mobile, every mobile has its fair share of cons.
Thank you!

]]>Most of us are confused while buying a new smartphone. If anyone wants to buy the perfect smartphone, I would recommend you to consider these factors before buying.
To read in Telugu, click here
Processor is the first factor, one must consider while purchasing a mobile. Let’s assume Mobile is the body then Processor is the heart of it.
No matter how up-to-date your operating system is, your phone processor is important to keep the phone running smoothly. When checking for a phone processor, you need to keep track of the number of cores and the clock speed.
More cores allow the phone to run more multiple functions and the clock speed determines how fast your device can work. At least 2.2 GHz is recommended for an average user to run multiple apps without much hassle.
The second factor one must need to consider is the RAM(Random Access Memory). This is where your recent apps’ data is stored. To make it clear, in simple terms, if your mobile has a small amount of ram, you will find that your mobile will become slow when you use multiple apps at the same time. The more memory you’ve got, the more apps you’ll run on your phone.
If you play heavy games, I would suggest you go for a phone with more RAM
ROM (Read-Only Memory), which is the total storage available on your mobile. There are multiple variants available. I would suggest you go from at least 64 GB.
The camera is the third Factor, Nowadays, it is not an easy task to estimate the camera quality. Most smartphone options are specified in the same way. The good news is that these days, phones in the 10K-15K INR price range also have decent camera quality.
A high megapixel count doesn’t mean the best camera. So, ignore that number. Just having many numbers of megapixels does not mean that a mobile phone camera is better. Many features like a camera aperture, pixel size, autofocus, ISO levels, and more are also required. The 32MP rear camera is not necessarily better than the 16MP camera. The same thing applies to the front-facing camera also.
If a smartphone has a higher number of pixels, then it can have a large image size, which becomes sharper when viewed on a smaller screen.
The battery is the fourth Factor and one of the most important specifications.
A mobile phone is said to be the best one, only when it has good battery capacity.
On average, A mobile battery’s capacities can start from 1700mAh and can go up to 7000mAh.
However, how much power you need depends on every individual. If you’re not heavy on apps and just need something simple, anywhere up to 3500mAh is usually enough for the day or If you play games regularly or use more apps, you need a phone with a higher battery capacity.
So we all know that Battery plays a major role in mobile. Any phone with a battery of more than 4000Mah will be easy for at least a day.
The display is another Factor, Some smartphones increase with the size along with their screens and Some even extend to give the phones a Notch display. People who watch a lot of movies and play games can make use of full-screen. While regular users can make do with something smaller for everyday social media use and texting.
Another thing to note is the battery consumption. Larger displays look better but drain battery life. Larger screens with the same specifications require more power than smaller screens. This can be fixed with a higher battery capacity, so you should also check your phone power capacity.
The phones with AMOLED displays are preferable because they are better at color reproduction. Also, these types of displays, when used with a black theme, can reduce power usage and thus can save battery.
It does not mean that mobile with LCDs is bad, I prefer AMOLED to LCD
Little Sarcasm: Do not get Exhilarated just because your Phone is bigger, it has a lot running in the Backend
Note: These are basic things to look for buying a new smartphone. More factors can also be included, but these are factors that play a greater role in making the Phone behave Smart. So do not forget to look for these things before buying a new smartphone.
